What:

 Benjamin Nathans, associate professor in the Department of History, teaches courses at Penn on the Cold War, the history of human rights, and other topics.  Educated at Yale and the University of California at Berkeley, he has also studied in Germany, Israel, and Russia.  He is the author of Beyond the Pale: The Jewish Encounter with Late Imperial Russia, which has been translated into Hebrew and Russian, and is currently completing a book entitled To the Success of Our Hopeless Cause: A History of the Soviet Dissident Movement.  Prof. Nathans chaired the committee of scholars that helped create the Jewish Museum in Moscow, which opened in 2012 to international acclaim.  His essays and reviews have appeared in The New York Review of Books, The Economist, The NationThe London Review of Books, the Times Literary Supplement, and other publications.
